It was Monday morning, I woke up, brushed my teeth, went for a little walk with Eliot, prepared breakfast, and checked FB to see what’s going on in the virtual life. Actually, virtual life (except long calls with my family and my friends) is the only connection with the world that I have nowadays. Last two years I was living “ on the agility road” moving from place to place depending on my agility competitions, training, or judging schedule.

In February I was leading agility seminars in Finland, the same in Japan, I went to visit my friends in Prague and my family to my home town in Slovakia. I was on the road, as usual. In early March I moved to Tenerife, Spain to get some energy and sun. Btw spending winter months in all year long sunny Canary islands was the best idea that came to my mind in last years.

I REALLY RECOMMEND IT

Early after I came here the Corona situation started to be really serious, countries started to close their borders one by one, flights between the countries were canceled, the news was full of tragic stories and Spain declared a lockdown. My dog Eliot and I got stuck in an Airbnb flat in a small God-forsaken village in the north of Tenerife.

…finally, back to the story. It was already the fourth week of the lockdown. My mind switched from a positive view of the world to a negative so I decided to stop checking the “Corona news” and I began to focus on things that I could influence instead of thinking about the various negative scenarios that might arise. This Monday morning, the first thing that caught my attention was a FB video made by agility people from South America where they are passing a toilet paper to each other.

The idea is to catch a toilet paper thrown by someone off the screen, make a short trick video with your dog, and then to throw the toilet paper away from the screen. Then the second video comes and so on and so on. It was great, it made me smile a lot and therefore I watched it a few times in a row. Actually, it made my day.

I couldn’t get the video out my head the whole day, I even got a great idea but there was a “but”. I was in lockdown and there was nobody to throw me a toilet paper. So the problem lasted only until I talked to my good friend Jessi and she turned the “but” into an opportunity, as usual. Are you aware of the half-empty/half-full glass syndrome? 🙂 “So you will be the first one in the chain,” she said immediately excited by my idea. This is the point!

TRY TO LOOK FOR WAYS HOW TO DO IT AND NOT FOR REASONS WHY DON’T DO IT

So I have created a FB event where I have invited agility judges all around the world who came to my mind. I told them about my idea and asked them to invite their friends, other agility judges who might be interested. The game was on. At that time I knew mainly European and Japanese judges, but somebody invited Gabriel, agility judge from Chile and he gave me contacts to other judges from America. After a few days, I received 40 videos. So I could start to work on the video.

You didn’t see the video yet? So check it out. ;)

I was amazed by the creativity of my colleague, every video was so original, different ideas, obstacles, surroundings, seasons. So many familiar faces, so close and so far away at the same time. One morning I just woke up with an idea to upgrade the typical “toilet paper video” a little bit so I asked all performers to make two extra videos. One, where they will clap their hands and smile and another one with the message.

SMILE AS IT IS POSITIVE EMOTION ITSELF, ADDITIONALLY, IT IS CONTAGIOUS AND FOR FREE

I liked the idea to make another part of the video as a message that would say that although we are apart now, we are still together, a message that everything is gonna be OK, said by our “movie stars”.

The message was:

Hello to all agility folks around the world!
This corona situation is quite tough...
All competitions are canceled. We can’t compete, we could not design
and judge courses, and we miss your amazing performances with your
dogs inside the ring!!A lot of us can’t even train properly because we
are locked down in our houses.
We can´t see our family’s, we can’t travel to our friends, and we can’t
fly to any other countries. There is a great distance between us.
We cannot see the ones we love. - Stefi
she was talking about me! - Seppo
But HEY we can play with our dogs, they are always there with us, by our sides.
We can teach them new tricks to work on their physical conditioning.
We can even work on our physical condition!
In these tough times, we can be here for those who need us, showing
support, and staying strong!
We can play with our children and spend more time with our family.
We can definitely think positive, and that positive spirit and
togetherness is what will get us through...
Together, we will beat this!!!
Together, while we are many kilometers apart, across cities, mountains,
rivers, and even oceans.
We are ALL TOGETHER!
We speak one language together today!
And the message is: “PASS ME TOILET PAPER, NOT CORONA!
This video was made for you to make you smile!
Although we are apart now, we are still together!”
Enjoy, stay safe, and have fun!

Lee, agility judge from the United Kingdom, helped me with the grammatical issues of the message, and Ana, agility judge from Spain, translated it to Spanish and French so I could put the subtitles to the video so it can reach more people. International cooperation as it should be!

After another few days, I have collected around 120 videos, still waiting for some latecomers but I was already putting it slowly together. I found the iMovie app very helpful and user-friendly, I made the whole video on my iPhone. The final video had almost eight minutes and I saw it so many times, that the main song was playing in my head all day long, for a few days.

IN TOTAL THERE WERE 40 AGILITY JUDGES FROM 24 COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD

Almost all European countries were represented there, as well as more distant countries such as Chile, El Salvador, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Argentina, Ecuador, USA, and Japan. I communicated with all interpreters on a daily basis for two weeks.

We were talking about videos, Corona situation and measures in each country, how everything is going, we were talking about life… I was the project manager, HR, and CEO at the same time. I didn’t even know that I am capable of such a multi-tasking level. Those two weeks were full of emotions, really good ones.

Now the video is flying through the virtual world to the real people, agility folks stuck in their houses, with canceled plans and borders closed. The video had 35 000 views on FB in the first three days and the reactions were incredible.

IF WE MADE SO MANY PEOPLE SMILE THANKS TO THIS VIDEO THEN THOSE TWO WEEKS WERE DEFINITELY THE MOST PRODUCTIVE TIME OF MY LIFE

Can’t wait to see the video in the next few years when all Corona situation will be just the story to tell and to remember. In the time when traveling will be easy as it was before, the borders will be open again and we will be able to go for a walk with our dogs as far as we want across cities, mountains, rivers, and even oceans…

I am truly positive that it will not take so much longer and we will meet on our agility roads again.

TILL THEN ENJOY THE VIDEO, SSTAY SAFE, AND HAVE FUN!

And remember that

“Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”

John Lennon
